When it comes to playing at online casino Canada, there’s only one person that everyone wants to be: Daniel Negreanu. He’s one of the best poker players of all time, and he’s proudly from Canada. We’re going to be learning all about this Toronto national, from his rise to fame in the poker playing world, up to where he is now.

Daniel Negreanu’s career so far

Daniel Negreanu’s career is full to the brim of wins and almost wins. As it stands, he has seven World Series of Poker bracelets as well as being named the winner of two World Poker Tour championships.

Even though he’s won a lot of the World Series of Poker final tables, he’s also been a close second multiple times. This might not be something he’d like to be known for, but it shows that even when he didn’t win, he was still very close to winning. It shows you how good a player he really is. Danil Negreanu has also been named the Card Player of the Year in 2004 as well as being the World Series of Poker Player of the Year.

And the titles don’t stop there! Daniel was named the World Poker Tour Player of the Year during the 2004 – 2005 season. Then in 2006, Daniel Negreanu won Favorite Poker Player at Card Player Magazine’s Player of the Year Awards.

Then when 2013 came around, he managed to get two World Series of Poker bracelets and then yet another World Series of Poker Player of the Year award. This meant that he was the only player who managed to win the award twice. This brought him into the Poker Hall of Fame in 2014 – definitely something he deserved after all of these awards!

Daniel Negreanu’s personal life

Daniel was born and raised in Toronto, seven years after his parents moved there from Romania. He can therefore speak Romanian fluently and hasn’t forgotten his heritage. He was not the best behaved at school and was regularly chastised for not following the rules.

This meant that he turned his attention towards poker from an early age. He began playing at the age of 15 and by the time high school came around, he found out he was a few credits short of graduating. This led to him dropping out in order to pursue poker as a career.

He started out as a rounder at charity casinos such as Casino Country and Fundtime Games whilst also on the lookout for other games to play. He started dating Evelyn Ng who actually turned out to be another great poker player. After a while though, he left Toronto for the lights of Las Vegas to pursue his dream of becoming a professional poker player. He left at 22 but soon had to return to rebuild his funds after a not so successful stint in Las Vegas.

Daniel has now been a United States citizen for over a decade having decided to live in the US over his native Toronto. He’s also been married to Amanda Leatherman since 2019. Things didn’t work out with his first wife Lori Lin Weber who he was married to between 2005 and 2007, nearer to the start of his career.

Daniel Negreanu’s biggest wins

Daniel has had some pretty significant wins in his time – he is one of the best poker players in the world after all. His biggest win before this year was the 2013 World Series of Poker APAC A$10,000 No-Limit Hold’em Main Event where he won a massive $1,038,825.

But he wanted to prove himself to still have what it takes to be named the best poker player in the world. So, at the beginning of 2024, he took part in the World Series of Poker $50,000 Poker Players Championship and won that, taking home an incredible sum of $1,178,703.

Back in 2013 he was named World Series of Poker’s Player of the Year. Back in 2013, he was still in his 30s and yet had won four bracelets that year. This meant that the title was not a surprise to anyone within the poker playing world. He was a Poker Stars ambassador at the time as well, so everyone in the poker playing world would agree that it was well deserved – and maybe about time too!

Where is Daniel Negreanu now?

Daniel is still proving to be one of the best poker players in the world – and has the World Series of Poker bracelet from 2024 to prove that he’s still on top of his game. As he’s been playing poker for the vast majority of his life, we don’t think there’s a chance he’d be giving it up any time soon.
